Blog Hop #15

This week—as I was driving my husband to work—I noticed that the leaves are already changing colors!  Last year, here in Ohio, I did not see the leaves changing colors so early—according to the photos on my digital camera—they didn’t start to turn colors until almost the second week of October!!

Now –the trees are just at the beginning stages of turning colors—we are in no way in the full swing of the color changes, yet.  I can already tell you though—some of the reds I am seeing—against the green are phenomenal.

Okay—enough excursions already-we have a topic to announce!!

Drumroll Please:

Blog Hop # 13

Fire and Ice brought out some awesomeness among the writers in our group!!  I was so happy to be able to read everyone’s take on it—I do think that I like the idea of a picture and a random word—but for this week I thought I might try something a bit different.

IT has been on my mind lately, and so I thought maybe we should write about IT.  No, not to be confused with “IT” as in IT but the thing that has been on my mind.

Okay—now I’m poking fun—how dare I !!  LOL!

Drumroll Please:

Blog Hop# 13:  Thoughts on Time…

Quote: Time, the cradle of hope.... Wisdom walks before it, opportunity with it, and repentance behind it:  he that has made it his friend will have little to fear from his enemies, but he that has made it his enemy will have little to hope from his friends.  ~Charles Caleb Colton

Video:

So here is the idea—take your Thoughts on Time—whatever they may be.  The quote above and the video are just ideas—on what some have said and sung about time.  So—take this topic and let it lead you where it will and come back here and enter the hop via Linky Tools below or leave your links below in the comments.  You can also leave your link in the document thread on The Writers’ Post group wall on Facebook!!

Once again, I can’t wait to see what you come up with—hope you all have a great week!!

Review: A Heart of Little Faith-by Jennifer Wilck

I think everyone can appreciate a well written romance novel, I know I certainly can and I was very ready to switch gears and escape into A Heart of Little Faith.  I must say, I was nicely surprised as this romance had some very real, very strong headed characters to get to know—and some tough obstacles to get past.  I think what I appreciated most about this romance novel is that these characters dealt with issues that usually stifle romance and yet somehow they worked through them and found love..  It wasn’t an easy road as trust issues and their pasts tried to get in the way—but ultimately—love wins out.

Set in New York City, Lily is a widow raising her 6 year old daughter.  She’s not acknowledged to herself that she’s ready to start dating when she bumps into Gideon at an art gallery.  Gideon has a disability and it confines him to a wheel chair—and it seems that one might over look him as a romantic lead—but Gideon’s personality lets us know that he isn’t going anywhere. Facing his own issues from his own tragedy, he doesn’t believe he’ll ever find love again because of his circumstances.  But the romance bug is ready to bite if he can get past some trust issues.  Lily and Gideon somehow find their way to romance—but not before encountering some true to life challenges along the way.

Wilck’s romance, A Heart of Little Faith, is a great novel that won’t leave you disappointed. It makes the reader think a bit about ‘romance outside the box’.  I enjoyed reading this romance novel. I highly recommend this excellent read.

Review: Taking Time To Breathe by Lisa Marie Earnest

taking time to breatheI just finished reading Taking Time to Breathe by Lisa Marie Earnest. Taking Time to Breathe is a short and moving first person account of healing and transformation.

Earnest takes her reader through a spiritual journey of healing.  Just like many journeys of faith, this one has to pass through the wilderness and into the land of milk and honey, by learning to put her complete trust in her Maker.

This deeply personal journey is not an easy trek to travel, because stark memories of pain, both physical and emotional, are so fresh it becomes hard not to look back and dwell within the pain.  At the same time, it is all too easy to hold back the trust needed for complete healing. Somewhere in the midst—this pattern of looking back and holding back must be broken and while she can’t do this of her own volition—she must if she wants to move forward with her life, and live in the promised land here on earth. She must make that choice, dig up that inner strength, and break through the barriers to leave the past behind.

If someone is hurting they can certainly relate to this piece and maybe able to draw strength from it.  I enjoyed reading about this journey—because while healing the brokenness is the main theme—it is also about courage and about breakthrough.  I encourage you to get your copy of Taking Time to Breathe today.

Taking Time to Breathe is available on LuLu.com

Review: Cutting Away the Pain by Summer Foovay

I recently read Cutting Away the Pain by Summer Foovay, a short novel with an intricate and powerful story line that has many facets of pain and emotions intertwined. I came to the table with little preconceptions of what I would be reading, noting that the cover and title gave me some idea it had to do with pain. It turned out that I spent the last week reading and rereading a completely captivating story that is filled with psychological components even the best in the field would love to study. Yet the story’s beauty is that at its core—it is about finding love.

Foovay’s tells an emotionally-moving, fictional story from a first person perspective.  It is the story of a girl who recalls growing up in a home filled with emotional and sexual abuse.  Even as the girl reaches the tender age of 19, the scars and pain from that abuse are evidenced in her self image and to some degree her ongoing submissive role to her abusers—that continues even after she turns of age. The emotional pain she suffers is profoundly evident as she recalls her story up until she meets The Mistress for the first time.

To say the very least, the girl’s first encounter with The Mistress is quite tantalizing and wondrous.  Okay let’s just cut to it—when they meet it is totally HOT!  The Mistress understands almost immediately the girl’s need for love and acceptance—and wraps her in compassion and unconditional love.

And yet—there’s more. While the love story is central—there is pain that has to be dealt with that needs a way for release. As the girl’s emotional pain surfaces, The Mistress does the one thing that no one has ever done for the girl; and only someone who loves her completely could perform these acts with the utmost attentiveness and care.

Foovay claims this story is not for the light hearted—and I have to agree.  This short work will totally grip you as its various layers and complexities unfold. It takes only reading those first few words to be totally sucked into a world of pain and love. And you somehow never fully walk away from it when you are finished reading. It may even draw you back for a second or third take.  You can find your copy of Foovay’s Cutting Away the Pain on Kindle—and it comes totally recommended.

Missing—A Movie in the Making

I just finished reading Barry Crowther’s novel, Missing. My first thoughts: Wow! When is the movie coming out?

I have to say that this story pulled me right in—into a world of bill collectors, accountants, gangs, bribery, scandal, detective work and mystery—and had me reading page after page of action packed scenes.  What kept me turning the pages for more was the leading question, “What the heck happened to Emma Neele?”  And I have to say—I just had to find out.  Yes, once you dive into this book, there is no pulling back…curiosity will propel you right through to the last page.

Matt Spears, your average debt collector, gets strong-armed into finding Emma Neele, the niece of a gangster, Vinny Barbour.  Spear’s, along with his kick-ass accountant Nathan Draper, are led on a not so straight forward adventure into finding the missing Emma.  They encounter some interesting characters along the way as they try to piece together where exactly she is and how to find her.

Crowther puts together an interesting story, with many twists and turns, totally engaging the reader as to the whereabouts of Emma Neele. His characters are lively, funny and completely believable; after all you do encounter the run of the gamut in everyday life. Crowther’s writing style is very straight forward, action packed, and clever.  I could totally envision the scenes while reading this book and yet all the way through to the end—I could only guess where it might take me next. Predictability is not something to expect—especially when it comes to the ending.

Crowther has written an exceptional mystery and very satisfying read.  One of my favorite reads this summer and I highly recommend you get your copy of Missing today.

Review of “His Leading Lady”

Part of the reason I created The Writers’ Post group was to create a place where bloggers could come together and support each others’ endeavors in the creative process.  The bonus, which I had not anticipated in creating such a group, was that I would have published authors joining us.  I find this to be totally exciting because there is so much we can learn from each other as a group and to have that level of experience among us is inspirational and motivating.

So what better way to support the members of my group than to at least have the courtesy of reading their works?  I do spend hours daily on the group wall clicking links to the members blogs and leaving them feedback—because I do honestly believe that feedback is the best way a writer can gauge if they are getting their message across. Now add to that that we have published authors in the group, I certainly don’t want to let them down either.  So with that said, I am going to try to review a published piece at least once a week. I want to give back to my group by contributing and supporting their work, and this would include our published authors.

This week, I’m going to review His Leading Lady written by Paula Martin, published by Whiskey Creek Press, LLC.

Paula Martin joined The Writers’ Group and shared with us snippets of her published book, His Leading Lady on her blog.  I have to say I was intrigued, because I do like to read romance novels. Paula’s snippets peaked my interest and she had me wanting to read the book before I bought my Kindle, so the anticipation built as each small snippet was put out on her posts.

Finally, I bought the Kindle and I purchased His Leading Lady.  I will be quite honest and say that I was taken in by the first chapter and it was hard to put that Kindle down until I’d finished reading the entire novel!! Paula has brilliantly written a page turner that dives the reader head first into romance, intrigue and mystery, set in England’s Theatrical West End.

Jess Harper meets Kyle Drummond, a big time producer and director in theatre, for the first time in her shop.  He delivers the news that her twin sister Lora, an actress in his next upcoming production, is missing.  Kyle, somewhat arrogant, threatens to end Lora’s career in the West End, if she doesn’t return soon to fulfill her theatrical contract.  Jess, unable to track down her twin’s whereabouts, realizes that she must make a decision to step up to the plate and try to save her sister’s career that she worked so hard to achieve.  Jess doesn’t quite believe in her own abilities to fill these shoes, yet takes on the challenge until she can unravel the mystery behind her twin’s disappearance. In the process, she falls for Kyle, who has figured her out, only to later doubt the relationship was premised on the truth. Feelings of anger and mistrust between Kyle and Jess flare and yet the show must go on.

The musical theatre scene provides a perfect backdrop for this thrilling page turner.  Paula does a wonderful job of introducing the reader to the ins and outs of the theatre business while keeping the story moving along at a quick pace and keeping the reader satisfied with a great romance story. This novel pulls you in and doesn’t let you go until you’ve read it through to the end—leaving the reader to want more at each page turn. If you are looking for a thrilling romance, look no further than His Leading Lady by Paula Martin, I highly recommend it.
